Thyroidectomy

Thyroid tumors often require surgical removal. The thyroid gland is surrounded by important nerves (both the superior and recurrent laryngeal nerves) and the parathyroid gland that controls calcium metabolism.

Although any surgery carries risks, these risks can be minimized with high tech monitoring to protect the normal structures. Intraoperative nerve integrity monitoring systems are now available that will allow for precise identification and preservation of both the superior and recurrent laryngeal nerves, crucial for normal voice after thyroidectomy.

Intraoperative monitoring of parathyroid hormone levels can help identify patients in need of parathyroid autotransplantation so as to maintain normal calcium levels.
